The combining of different forms of scientific knowledge as a way of understanding physical phenomena. The philosophical core and motive force behind consilience is faith that all phenomena in creation are physical processes that can be scientifically reduced through decreasing levels of complexity to the laws of physics. Wilson believed that everything in creation is a physical effect, including the realm of mind. His prejudicial belief that consciousness is a complicated biochemical effect impoverished his science in complicated ways.
Wilson identified six categories of science corresponding to increasing levels of complexity, his hierarchy of reduction.
